Lernerville: End of an era 2004 November 24

There are a few articles in the Pittsburgh Post-Gavette about Lernerville being sold, including “Lernerville: End of an era.” I haven’t been to Lernerville but I hope that a corporation like Boundless doesn’t ruin the atmosphere of the “local short track.” The idea of the consolidation of short tracks by groups like Boundless concerns mw. Hopefully I’m worried about nothing.

LVS update 2004 November 21

Someone asked me on the LUG/IP IRC channel yesterday how I liked my LVS. So, I figured an update here would be a good idea. In three words “I like it.” (more…)

Internet Librarian notes: Blogs 2004 November 17

I felt that this year Internet Librarian had a diverse among of topics of interest to librarians who use the Internet in their daily duties – however there was not a lot of presentations with the “nuts and bolts” for those on the systems side of things. That said, I still think it was a very useful conference for myself, and I have learned a few things and I will be bringing back some ideas that I think will be very useful for RUL. In particular I like the ideas of using a blog as a backend tool for various uses in the library. (more…)

Internet Librarian Presentation 2004 November 16

Today I gave my F/OSS Library Automation Systems presentation at Internet Librarian 2004 in Monterey, CA. Besides thinking the presentation starting 15 minutes before it did, I felt it went real well. Also, the questions people asked me lead me to believe that the topic was of interest to those in attendance and that the focus I took was just about what people were expecting. Judging from the feedback I received from a number of people (at least seven or eight) thus far, so did the audience. Of course, sometimes the feedback is not 100% accurate as very few people will come up and say that your presentation was lousy, but I am still confident that it was well received.

Hawaii 2004 November 15

I made it back to the Mainland after a few days in Hawaii. I only went to one island (Oahu) since I wasn’t going to be there long. My nights were planned with going to the sprint car races at Hawaii Motor Speedway in Eva Beach, HI. The track is a 1/3 mile clay oval. The track itself was in pretty good shape each night. The shows could have run off quicker (almost 5 and ½ hours for a 2 division show is not good). I guess that what happens when you are the only show in town. Oh well, another state down in my quest for all 50.

Besides going to the races I did a lot of sight seeing. I also hiked up Diamond Head Crater. It is about a 0.8 miles – all up hill – to the top. The views on the top were excellent, as was just the views everywhere along the shore lines. Overall it was a nice time, but I would have preferred a different island that may not be as crowded. There was a lot of traffic and just too many people.

Oh well, I better get back to looking over my presentation I’m giving tomorrow at Internet Librarian on Open Source Intergrated Library Management Systems in Monterey California. I’ll report more on my trip latter.

Rutgers 6 – Princeton 4 2004 November 6

Today is the 135′th anniversary of the first college football game in which Rutgers beat Princeton by a score of 6 to 4. You can read an article about it on The Rutgers Scarlet Knights web site.

Talking about Rutgers, they played Boston College tough but still lost today. They still have a chance of being bowl-eligible if they win the last two games against Navy and UCONN, but even if they do I’m not sure if they’ll get a bid.

In Iowa, the election lingers 2004 November 5

I was listening to the radio this morning on the way to work. The two hosts made a brief mention of Iowa and the Presidential election results. Neither host knew who won so I decided to look on the web. According to USA Today, “In Iowa, the election lingers” and we won’t know who won until the end of next week. Imagine the uproar from both the Democrats and Republicans if the election came down to Iowa and we were waiting so long for the results.

When America Was Held Hostage 2004 November 4

It is hard to believe it was 25 years ago today that American citizens were taken hostage in Iran. The Wall Street Journal’s opinion site, OpinionJournal has posted an article by Ken Adelman that they published 5 years ago.

While I have seen some newspaper articles, including an AP article on the Detroit Free Press website, I didn’t hear that much about this on the radio or TV. It seems like a major anniversary to go by so quietly – especially when you consider the current state of USA-Iran relations

Voting 2004 November 2

I went to the polls this morning before work. It didn’t seem to be any more crowded in then in the past. Maybe even less so considering it is a Presidential election. Maybe I just hit it at the right time, but usually a lot of people want to vote before work. I know they are calling for a huge turnout, but I didn’t see anything at my polling location to suggest that is going to be true here in New Jersey.

BTW: If you haven’t voted yet, you can always write me in. :-)
