Chili Bowl, Tulsa Expo Center, Jan 5, 2005 2005 January 6
Last night I saw Josh Ford win the first night of the 2005 Chili Bowl in Tulsa.
The day started off by me and my friend Walt heading to Newark airport. We got there early so we had lunch at Gallagher’s steak house inside of terminal C. The filet I got was excellent and perfectly well done, but for the price you’d think they’d throe in a roll or something (you have to buy everything separately). But if you want good food in the airport, it is a good choice and other Gallagher’s would be a good place to go on a special occasion. Just before the flight was supposed to leave, we were informed that we were going to be taking off late because they had to change a tire on the plane. We ended up taking off an hour late. That wouldn’t have been so bad, but we were already cutting time short to get to the Chili Bowl on time. The flight was uneventful and we landed at 7:02 PM, two minutes after the Chili Bowl was scheduled to start. It took us about 25 minutes to get the rental car and drive to the Chili Bowl.
By the time we got to our seats we missed the first four heats. Luckily, the fifth heat had two of the drivers we most wanted to see – J.J. Yelley and Steve Buckwalter. J.J. had the early lead but spun out collecting Buckwalter. Buckwalter had to go to the rear and J.J. ended up going to the pits. Buckwalter put on a nice show and went all the way to the front and took the heat win.
J.J. ended up breaking in the C main. If he can get the car to stay together we will see him put on a good show on Saturday night.
Buckwalter, who started 3′rd in the feature, set up to run the outside. Unfortunately for him, there was no outside. He ended up falling back to 7′th and is locked into the B main on Saturday. However, that is still a good showing for him.
The results of the A-main were
