Chili Bowl, Tulsa Expo Center, Jan 7, 2005 2005 January 8
Friday was day three of the Chili Bowl. Corey Kruseman took the win. Apparently his car owner didn’t have enough money to buy a right front midget tire so he put a motorcycle wheel on the car! I’m not sure if it helped but, but his car was fast.
The day started off with a trip to the Harley dealer for some t-shirts. Then we went to a Drysdale’s western wear store and found some great deals on flannel shirts and other clothing. While in their we met Cactus Jack Yelley, J.J.’s father. He is a very interesting guy. He is friends with Billy Pauch who runs modifeds back in New Jersey, so we talked a lot about Billy and Billy’s son who is starting to become a real good racer in his own right. When Walt mentioned J.J.’s offer to get me a hair cut, Cactus Jack said he’d give J.J. twenty bucks so he can get some shaving supplies.
We went to a Irish restaurant called Kilkennys on 15′th street for lunch. It was excellent. I really like Irish food and they made a very tasty corned beef and cabbage. Highly recommended. Walt got a boxty which looked excellent as well.
Then it was off to the track. Friday night had the track in better shape for passing then the previous two. Kasey Kahne, Steve Paden, and others put on some good performances in the alphabet soup. I was rooting for Rip Williams, but his car wasn’t working as good as it could be. However, he did manage to win the first C-main. Friday nights results were:

Jones, Torrance, CA; 3. #11W Dave Darland, Lincoln, IN; 4. #4B Bobby East, Brownsburg, IN; 5. #94 Brian Gerster, Noblesville, IN; 6. #23 Jerry Coons Jr., Tucson, AZ; 7. #1NZ Michael Pickens, Auckland, NZ; 8. #82 David Gough, Machesney Park, IL; 9. #26 Tyler Walker, Los Angeles, CA; 10. #30J Johnny Rodriguez, Elk Grove, CA; 11. #67 Steve Kinser, Bloomington, IN; 12. #01 Steve Paden, Downey, CA; 13. #57K Randy Koch, Oregon, WI; 14. #12AZ Jeff Henry, Glendale, AZ; 15. #12 Billy Wease, Noblesville, IN; 16. #37 Matt Mitchell, Yorba Linda, CA; 17. #85A Justin Allgaier, Springfield, IL; 18. #8 Jimmy Sills, Elverta, CA; 19. #37P Alex Pruett, Carefree, AZ; 20. #30 Craig Carey, Riverton, IL; 21. #19S Robby Flock, Murrieta, CA; 22. #51H Mike Hess, Petersburg, IL; 23. #9 Kasey Kahne, Huntersville, NC; 24. #73S Clay Klepper, Brownsburg, IN.
After the race we walked around the pits and found out it was Michael Pickens’ (from New Zealnd) 22′nd birthday. His crew brought out a cake and we helped sing “Happy Birthday” to him.
After the race we went to Whataburger. Whataburger is a hamburger chain that I’ve never seen on the east coast. They are very good for a fast food chain burger and I love the fries. After that it was time for bed.
Today is the final night of the Chili Bowl. We have some great drivers like J.J. Yelley starting back in the alphabet soup, so I’m looking forward to some of the best racing I’ll see all year.
