Chili Bowl Finals, Tulsa Expo Center, Jan 8, 2005 2005 January 9
Saturday was the Chili Bowl finals. There was a total of 19 events, starting with 2 “J” features. Brett Hearn and Kevin Doty won the first ever J-mains at the Chili bowl. At the end of the day, Tracy Hines ended up winning his first Chili Bowl. Tracy started on the pole, but he raced hard and earned the victory over Dave Darland and last years winner Corey Kruseman in a race that went the last 31 laps without a yellow flag.
Early on in the alphabet Kevin Doty and Brett Hearn put on a good show jumping a few letters in the alphabet soup after shaving to start in the “J”. Brett Hearn won both his “J” and “I” main. Talking about Hearn, he and Chris Economaki were both on our airplane. Economaki sat next to us while we were waiting to board the plane. It was a pleasure to get to talk to such a legend for a few minutes.
J.J. Yelley didn’t manage to do much as he didn’t even get out of the “I” main. No one really jumped a huge amount of features but a few drivers did jump 2 or 3.
A good performance were put in by east coast racer Ray Bull. Bull started on the front row of a “B” main and transfered to the “A” after easily winning his race. Starting 13′th or 14′th in the feature, Bull moved up all the way to 5′th before the race was over. Talking to him in the pits afterwords you could see he was one happy racer. After all, why wouldn’t he be wit all of the top drivers in this race, coming home 5′th out of 249 drivers is an outstanding result. Bull did get into Tony Stewart when Stewart bobbled in the “A” main. Stewart stopped on the track, but somehow Bull kept it going. Stewart ran a few laps after that but pulled his car to the infield and was done for the day. When a few people were asking him about the incident, Bull said he “feels like Robby Gordon.” From my view (which was pretty far away, but I was keeping a close on eye on the battle), Bull didn’t do anything wrong and he couldn’t have done anything to avoid hitting Stewart.
Another strong performance by a north east driver was put in by Tim McCreadie. He came home 9′th in his first ever midget race. McCreadie is most known for racing big-block D.I.R.T. modifieds, but last year he started to do a lot of dirt late model racing with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.
The flight home Sunday morning, besides the fore-mentioned conversation with Chris Economaki was pretty routine and we made it back to New Jersey in one piece. The next race I’ll probably get to is the TQ midgets in Atlantic City.
