Northeast openers snowed out

It looks like the three northeast race tracks (Hagerstown, Lincoln, Williams Grove) that were planning on opening this weekend have snowed out. I guess I’ll have to watch the NASCAR to get any racing fix this weekend. Talking about NASCAR, I sort of watched the truck race last night, but didn’t pay much attention as I was working on a bunch of other stuff. Anyway, I was hoping Mike Bliss would have pulled off the win as a in-race replacement driver. It looked like he was going to pull it off until he ran out of fuel. Congratulations to Steve Park for getting his first truck win.

Proprietary software is not free

Recently I have been working on a couple of article and conference presentation ideas that involve Free/Open Source Software (I’ll just use OSS for brevity for the rest of this article). During my research I have ran across a number of articles, some written by University administrators , that point out the OSS is not free of costs once you factor in staff time to test and insatll it. Daytona 500

I sat home on the couch and watched the Daytona 500 Sunday. Overall it wasn’t a great race. It was a good race, but not great. Congratulations to Jeff Gordon for the win even if I’m not really a fan of his. At least it wasn’t another DEI car or, even worse, Kurt Busch. Most of the race was rather ho-hum. I was kind of hoping the ending would be ho-hum as that would mean Tony Stewart would have gotten the win. Great runs by Scott Riggs finishing 5′th and Kevin LePage finishing 9′th. It was also nice to see Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace running up front and getting top 10 finishes in what appears to be the last Daytona 500 for each.

I can understand why Tony Stewart was upset with Jimmy Johnson. I’m not saying any other driver wouldn’t have done the same thing, but Johnson could have caused a heck of a wreck with his blocking tactics.

Daytona Trucks and Busch Series Races

Last night I watched the NASCAR Truck series race on TV. It was a pretty good race. I was hoping that Jimmy Spencer would have taken the win, but it appears NASCAR made the correct call about Bobby Hamilton being ahead when the yellow light came out on the last lap. Hamilton played his strategy perfectly. He’s a cagey veteran for sure.

NASCAR also appears to have made the right call about Tony Stewart taking the white flag before the last lap. Glad to see Tony get his first series win. How about Tony racing through the grass! Robby Gordon got a nice finish in fifth. I hope Robby does well this year in the Nextel Cup series as an owner-driver. The Busch series race was pretty good, although I thought the truck was a little better,

Hopefully the Daytona 500 will be as good of a race as the Truck and Busch series races.

Library Building Project

TCNJ library just put up a website with pictures of the new library that is being built. Including are a bunch of photographs, including a few of my future office. My office is behind the [missing] half moon window. Hopefully the project will finish in time to move in this summer.

New York Daily News – Sports – Tim Smith: Knot in stomach may be related to one in head

Just a quick follow-up to yesterday’s post: I just read a column in the New York Daily News by by Tim Smith headlined: Knot in stomach may be related to one in head. Apparently Andy Reid has amnesia and can’t even remember the details of why they were so nonchalant when they were down by 10 points at the end of the game.

Super Bowl

I went over a friends house to watch the Super Bowl last night. I didn’t really care who won, but since the party consisted of Eagles fans, I decided that I’d be the antagonist and pick the Patriots (that, and I thought they were going to win). Above everything I was hoping for a good game. Continue reading →

Daytona 24 hours

I watched parts of the 24 hour race from Daytona. I think this is really a race that would be better in person as I didn’t really get a good feeling of it from TV. For a while it was shaping up to be a good race for the lead, but one of the cars in the 2-way battle had some mechanical issues with about 3 hours left. The stock car races will be starting down in Florida soon. I guess that means spring is-a-coming.
