New Egypt Speedway, April 16 2005 2005 April 18

I made it to the second race of the season at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday, April 16. They went with the same no heat but for the modifieds format they used last week. Despite a 25 minute long red for a driver that needed a helicopter ride to the hospital we got out about 10:00 PM. Maybe this format will get us out of there at a reasonable time after all. They claim they want to make the show last from 7 PM to 11 PM to the summer. I’m not sure if that will happen, but a three and a half hour show might be doable judging from the first two weeks.

The modified feature was OK. Billy Pauch won it again in pretty easy fashion. The only driver that was anywhere near as fast as him was Frank Cozze who despite starting deep in the field finished second. Once they start handicapping we’ll probably get some better races.

I mentioned the helicopter ride early. There was an accident in the SS Sprints (Super Sportsman for those in PA). It didn’t look so bad but George Idell Jr. had to be airlifted out. I heard some various rumors at the track and on the Internet as to his condition, but since I don’t know any of them to be true, I won’t repeat them here.

Al-in-all, a nice night at the races although it was nothing spectacular and George Idell Jr.’s accident put a damper on things.

My 2005 racing stats after New Egypt are:

Races: 9
Tracks: 5 (1 new)
States: 4 (0 new)
