New Egypt Speedway, May 7 2005 2005 May 7

I decided to stay local this weekend and go to New Egypt Speedway for the third time this year. One reason was I was hoping with their new format we would be able to get out of their early and I could watch the last 100 laps of the first night race at Darlington for the Nextel Cup series. That didn’t happen as the show lasted more then 5 hours.

There were a lot of yellow flags, a few reds, and a lot of wasted time by track officials all adding up to me not getting to my car until after 11:10 PM. I did get to listen to the last 30 laps of the Nextel cup race and managed to get in my house for the 2 lap shoot out so I did see that excitement.

Anyway back to New Egypt. Billy Pauch had trouble with his modified and ran the #904 in the consi and the feature. He started 22′nd in the feature and made it up to sixth before a flat tire sent him to the pits. I think he ended up finishing about 10′th. In between the start and the flat Billy was flying — most of the time while battling Jimmy Horton. They had a great battle running side-by-side for about 20 laps while passing cars. A few times they made it three wide while going around top cars such as former track champion Roger Laureno. Their battle was so good I didn’t watch Frank Cozze that much who won the race from the pole over Keith Hoffman and Ryan Godown. What I did see up front was decent racing as Cozze never really pulled away but was still able to hold off the cars behind him. While overall the racing was just so-so, Pauch’s run in the feature made up for the rest of the evening.

My 2005 racing stats after the May 7′th race at New Egypt:

Races: 12
Tracks: 6 (1 new)
States: 5 (0 new)
