Last night Ray Evernham showed up at New Egypt Speedway and raced a DIRT big block modified. During the heats he just ran around the back, but he actually raced his way into the twin twenty features in the consi. Read the rest of this entry »

On Friday night, July 29 I drove up to the Catskills to see a night of regular racing at Accord Speedway with my dad. The worst part about Accord is getting there from my house. The traffic getting to this track on a Friday is horrible until you get off of the NY Thruway. Getting home late at night, however, is a breeze and I made it back to my dads in under 2.5 hours. The races were pretty good but you have to feel bad for Larry Hendershot who probably would have won the feature if a lapped car didn’t spin out in front of him allowing Rich Ricci, Jr. to take the lead and eventually the win. On Sunday night I went to Huset’s Speedway just outside of Sioux Falls, South Dakota for a regular show of racing. Before the races I went to a park and took a short (about 2 miles) hike around a small restored prairie in Sioux City. Read the rest of this entry »

While planning my trip to the plains states, I knew I wanted to catch a race in western Minnesota. I decided on Canby Speedway over a couple of other tracks because this race was being held during the county fair. I really enjoy going to races during fairs. You get to sample the fair and all sorts of food on sticks, look at farm animals, and it is just an overall fun experience and the races seem to have an extra buzz about them. Unfortunately many tracks that are on fair grounds don’t run during fair weeks because the track is needed for other things. Read the rest of this entry »

On Friday July 22 I flew from Newark, NJ to Sioux City, Iowa and then drove about 6 hours to Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, North Dakota to see a regular weekly race at the track. This was my first ever race at the track, and the first time I was ever in the state of North Dakota. Read the rest of this entry »

Below is a letter I just sent to Home Depot. I encourage you to not shop there based on my recent experiences at this chain of stores.
Hello, I am writing today to say that I will no longer be a Home Depot customer because of the lousy service I had at a Home Depot store today that was repeated on the customer care telephone number. It took about 20 minutes to get a price corrected on an extension cord. This is ridiculous. This came on the heels of me trying to use the self check-out at another Home Depot and it malfunctioning and no one available to fix it for so long that I had no choice but to leave almost $200 worth of merchandise on the counter and go to the “blue” home improvement store across the street. To make matters worse, when I called the customer complaint line when I got home, I basically got blown off after being on hold for over 10 minutes. What kind of “Customer Care” is that? I’ll tell you, it is absolutely none! Read the rest of this entry »

I’m currently waiting for my plane to leave the Sioux City, Iowa airport. One of the neat things about flying in and out of small city airports is their size. They claim to have 3 gates. The airport is so small you have to walk out to the plane! Another nice thing about this airport is the free Wi-Fi Internet access. While I’m flying back to New Jersey today, my vacation isn’t over and I have various plans for the weekend depending on the weather reports. Anyway, I’ll have various reports on my vacation in the days to come. I had a very good time despite the main reason for my vacation (The USAC midget race at Eagle Speedway near Lincoln, Nebraska) being canceled due to a huge rain storm the morning before the race.

This morning when I came to work, there were a bunch of book movers. They are starting to move our collections at the TCNJ library to the new building. It is exciting to see this happening and it looks like we really will get into the new building before September 1.

Saturday night LUG/IP had our annual Trenton Thunder baseball game outing. The weather was iffy, but a few of us withstood a two hour rain delay before the game started and saw a pretty good baseball game that was one by the Thunder. A fun time was had by all who stayed. One of the things the Thunder did that I thought was really nice was even though the game was completed, because of the long delay, they are giving everyone a ticket to another game. How many short tracks would do that? None that I know of. Read the rest of this entry »

I just came across The National Map Viewer. It is pretty neat and you can zoom in on all of the topographical maps for areas you are interested in. I know there are some commercial programs available that allow you to use these maps, but I never tried them, so I don’t know if the you would have better functionality (and better speed) or not. However, this is pretty neat, although if I wanted a topographical map for hiking or some other purpose, I’d want to actually purchase one as I find the format much better then anything I can print off of the computer without some sort of fancy plotter.
