I installed ubuntu 8.10 and of course there was no sound. It's very easy to correct, piece of cake.
1. Double click on Speaker in the top right hand corner. Bring up the volume Control Alsa mixer window.
2. Click Switches tab.
3. At External Amplifier, unclick checked box, that is remove check mark.
4. Run Hardware testing to check audio. Click System tab, then Administration> Hardware testing.
Forget all that other stuff about messing with pulseaudio, running aplications etc.

removing pulseaudio on ubuntu 8.10 shouldn't be tied to the ubuntu-desktop. I just did it.
Try to do a sudo apt-get update first and see if the dependency gets fixed.

Hmmmmm... I don't remember it wanting to remove ubuntu-deskop for me, but maybe things have changed. You might not have to remove pulseaudio as long as you make sure it doesn't start, but I didn't try that.

Unfortunately, when I try the above, it asks me if I want to remove ubuntu-desktop.
Uh... no.
Sounds like it's a requirement, much like that flippin Evolution.
And I thought Ubuntu / Linux was about freedom and choice!
